JOUR-PAC is proud to endorse Debbie Lesko for Arizona's 8th Congressional District Special Election. This district is currently represented by Rep. Trent Franks (AZ-08), who resigned from office. There will be a special election primary on February 27, 2018.
Debbie Lesko is a former Arizona State Senator and Representative with a proven record as a conservative reformer. Here are some highlights: "Happily married mother of three children Bachelor's degree in Business Administration Arizona State Representative - Legislative District 21, 2008-2012 Arizona State Senator - Legislative District 21, 2012-current Arizona Senate President Pro-Tempore Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and member of the Health and Rules Committees Advisory Council member, Faith House Domestic Violence Shelter Fighter Country Partnership member (Supports Luke AFB and military members) Served on the Desert Valley Elementary School Site Council (Peoria Unified School District) Served as Arizona Federation of Taxpayers' Board Member Served as Elected Officer of the State and County Republican Party Served as a hearing officer in the North Valley Justice Court Served as Legislative District 9 Republican Chairman Served as voter registration chairman for the Maricopa County Republican Party Served as 1st Vice President of the Arrowhead Republican Women Club." The following are some of her views on some important issues: "National Debt: "President Obama was a tax-and-spend liberal and in his short reign he accumulated more debt than all previous Presidents combined. This is outrageous. In Congress I will fight for a balanced budget, to end budget gimmicks, and to rein in spending that both parties have let get out of control. If that means I have to tell Speaker Ryan no, then that's exactly what I will do. No more burdening the generations that come after us with massive debts. The time to tackle this is now." Education: "I believe education is about empowering parents to make the right choices for their children and their families. That's why I believe the federal government needs to get out of the way of decisions made at the local level. I will support federal block grants back to states so that we in Arizona can continue to decide how best to spend our money - not bureaucrats in Washington." Border Security: "We must secure our border, period. Some sections need a physical barrier like the wall, and other parts require technology and more manpower." She has received the endorsements of some prominent groups and leaders: Maggie's List, a group created to raise awareness and funds to increase the number of conservative women elected to federal public office, stated: "As a fiscal conservative, Debbie understands the effects of high taxes on the families of CD-08. Debbie has an impressive political background. Debbie served in the Arizona House from 2008-2012. In 2012 she began serving in the Arizona Senate. She was the Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and member of the Health and Rule Committees. In 2016, Debbie worked on Pension Reform for firefighters and police officers. She then worked on the first ESA vouchers in the country. Debbie also worked on a historic tax reform that lowered taxes for consumers and business owners. House Freedom Fund, a conservative organization backed by several conservative House members including House Freedom Caucus members, stated: "State Senator Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) is running for the Republican nomination in the special election for Congress in Arizona’s 8th district. She’s a proven conservative leader who will fight for limited government, economic freedom, and personal responsibility. Lesko was elected to the Arizona state house in 2008 and to the state senate in 2012. She has fought for lower taxes, fewer regulations, pension reform, school choice, and greater protections for the unborn. If she’s elected, she will stand up to the big spenders in both parties. “In Congress I will fight for a balanced budget, to end budget gimmicks, and to rein in spending that both parties have let get out of control,” said Lesko. “If that means I have to tell Speaker Ryan no, then that’s exactly what I will do. No more burdening the generations that come after us with massive debts. The time to tackle this is now.” Please support Debbie Lesko in the February 27th primary election by donating to her campaign today. The primary election is the race that counts since the Republican nominee will be heavily favored in the general election. Now is the time for conservatives to help elect the best candidate. The Arizona Republic, an Arizona newspaper, stated: "But what really sets Lesko apart from this right-wing field of candidates is that she enjoys the advantage of actually making things happen – big things. Her highest achievement was shepherding through pension reform in 2016 in a way that drew the support of both parties. Her bill helped shore up the state’s seriously underfunded public safety worker pension plan, and drew the applause of conservative political observers. Our editorial columnist Robert Robb called it “a paradigm buster” that “blazed new ground on a difficult and emotional topic that is producing paralysis around the country.” Before that, Lesko sponsored a bill signed by Jan Brewer that dramatically overhauled the state’s sales-tax collection system. While Lesko is too conservative on immigration policy for our taste, her tough stand on border security is prerequisite to running in CD 8. And there is some balance to Lesko's immigration brief. She doesn’t describe Trump's wall as a panacea, saying, “Some sections (of the border) need a physical barrier like the wall, and other parts require technology and more manpower.” While some of her opponents would catapult “Dreamers” across the border and back to Mexico, Lesko expresses sympathy for those young people brought here illegally as children by their parents. She would grant them legal status, though not a path to citizenship. We also had our policy differences with Lesko on Arizona’s school-voucher program. We’ve expressed concerns about Empowerment Scholarship Accounts, and Lesko recently authored a bill to expand them. But they do show she is in the thick of working and shaping policy. Lesko has more than proven her conservative bona fides. She has the support of the House Freedom Caucus, made up of conservative and libertarian members of the U.S. House of Representatives. To her credit, she has demonstrated she is not a rigid ideologue. Her work on pension reform proved she could reach across the aisle and also work with labor. In the state Capitol's #MeToo cases, Lesko showed good sense calling for the resignation of state Rep. Don Shooter, who had been accused of sexual harassment by more than a half-dozen women. But in this field, only one person can boast of large policy achievements." Debbie Lesko has the experience and a proven record as a former State Senator and Representative and the character and integrity to be an excellent representative for the people of Arizona's 8th Congressional District. She is a just, compassionate, results-driven candidate who will pursue justice, opportunity, and reform in Congress. Therefore, JOUR-PAC officially endorses Debbie Lesko for Arizona's 8th Congressional District! We urge the citizens of Arizona's 8th Congressional District to support Debbie Lesko for Congress.
